DeKalb Medical was founded in 1961 and is a not-for-profit health system consisting of three hospital campuses–DeKalb Medical at North Decatur, DeKalb Medical at Downtown Decatur and DeKalb Medical at Hillandale, as well as 50 DeKalb Medical Physicians Group offices with 115 providers in DeKalb and Gwinnett counties. Its medical staff includes more than 800 doctors in 55 specialties.
Sepsis was identified as a top driver of inpatient mortality system-wide and subsequently, the organization made a commitment to prioritize this issue. They were challenged with the task of evaluating and refining the processes of early recognition and treatment of sepsis patients. Specifically, they wanted to establish a process for timely implementation of evidenced-based three- and six-hour care bundles.
